AMA Supercross Rule BookAMA Supercross Rule Book

The AMA Supercross Rule Book for 2012 clearly states how this situation should be handled.

Section "4.21 Restarts" section b. states;

The race is stopped (with more than three laps and  less than 90%  of  the  total  distance  completed  by  the  race  leader, rounded down to the nearest whole number of laps / whether it be a Heat, Last Chance Qualifier or Main Event)

Therefore

4. Riders will be restarted from a staggered standing start  in

the starting area .

a. Riders will be lined up in a staggered formation beginning

on the starting straight at a start line located by the first

turn, starting with the rider that was in the first posi tion

and continuing back towards the starting area.

b.  Riders not ready to take their position in line will be placed

last.

c.   Once all riders are in position, the starter will display a

green flag to signal the start.

d.  Any movement of the motorcycle before the display of the

green flag will be considered a jumped start. Any rider

deemed to have jumped the start will be penalized  a

minimum of two positions in the final results.

e.  Eligible riders who are unable to participate in the re- start

due to a stalled motorcycle or continued repairs may join

the race from the starting area at anytime during the race.

6.   The race will  be run for the remaining number of laps .

7.   In the case of a Main Event, full championship points will be

awarded.

So they got it right at the Indy Supercross. The Lites main event went on with only a few othe shake-ups that night. Primarily it was Ken Roczen throughing away his position out front with a mishape on a tricky single-in-table-top that sent Rockies KTM ghost riding over the backside of the jump. Blake Wharton made the most of Roczens mishape to take over first and the main event vicrtory just ahead of Pro Circuits Darryn Durham and Geico Hondas Justin Barcia who missed the top step of the podium for the first time this season with a third place finish.
