Freestone Raceway

freestone.png

Founded in May of 2000, Freestone County Raceway was built to present a first-class amateur day-and-night racetrack for riders and families to enjoy. Leading up to 2007, AMA Pro Racing officials made the trek to Freestone to approve a layout for a new AMA Pro Motocross National track. The new pro track, named Freestone Raceway, hosted its first AMA Motocross National on Labor Day 2007, marking the first time in nearly twenty years that the Lone Star State hosted to round of the AMA Motocross Championship.

Track owner/promoter Tony Miller has been around racing for a very long time. "I started with professional racing when I had my own road racing and flat track teams," Miller says. "Then, a few years later, my son Clayton started racing motocross and I gained a strong interest in the sport. In 2000, we built our first motocross track, which is known today as Freestone County Raceway.

"In 2007, we were given the opportunity to acquire Broome-Tioga's spot on the AMA Pro Motocross Championship schedule," Mills adds. "We jumped at the opportunity and built our second track on the facility, which is called Freestone Raceway."

Freestone is known for its unique track layout and for being demanding on the riders, due to both the track and the often-warm Texas weather. The 2008 race was like a survival test for the competitors, with James Stewart and Ryan Villopoto emerging victorious. Both would go on to win the AMA Motocross Championships in their respective classes.

Freestone also hosted one of the closest races of the year in Women's Motocross, as Honda riders Ashley Fiolek and Jessica Patterson battled one another through both motos. In the end it was Fiolek getting the nod, and she, too, would go on to win the WMA Championship, proving that Texas looms large on the road to championships in Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross.
