Both Davi Millsaps and James Stewart easily qualified for the main event with Stewart winning his second consecutive heat race in as many starts so far this season. The main event however presented challenges for both riders. While navigating the first few turns in the crowded pack just after the start, Stewart briefly got hung up and became connected with another rider’s machine, he passed the green flag in 13th with his work cut out for him. While running fourth on the first lap, Millsaps washed out in a tricky sand section going down and starting lap two in 16th. Stewart battled through the field finding himself inside the top-10 by just the fourth lap.

On lap seven Stewart was challenging for fifth when he accidently bumped the back tire of the rider in front of him causing him to go down in the same sand section that claimed Millsaps earlier in the race. Stewart re-mounted in 14th and began once again charging forward. Stewart crossed the checkers in eighth, with Millsaps 13th.

Stewart, who was ill all day and skipped the second qualifying practice in order to rest for the night program after setting the fastest lap in the first timed practice said after the race, “I rode really good considering how bad I felt all day being sick. Once we get our starts right then it will be good. The start and the crash cost me a podium but we were way better than last week and we will only get stronger. I have faith in my team and 15 rounds left.”

Round three of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship will be Jan. 21 at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, Calif. CBS will air the original broadcast from Los Angeles at noon (EST) on Jan. 22.
